HIT BY PITCH

Not common, but does happen
Hit by pitch, a minor hazard
of the fastpitch softball game

It can sting: the hit by pitch (HBP), especially when a very hard softball, thrown from 43 feet, is hurled at speeds typically 58 – 65 MPH.

It always draws a startled gasp from an anxious crowd as well as a free trip to first base. A trainer, coach and/or umpire will inspect any bruise to ensure the player can continue to perform.

Casey Beall
While the “hit by pitch” is not common in the Capital Athletic League (CAC), it does happen and even with some frequency over the course of an entire season.

Just ask senior #17 OF Casey Beall (Severn, MD). She led the Wesley Wolverines last year by being plunked 6 times. The next closest to her on the team was sophomore #13 Utility Ashley Royer (Lititz, PA) with just 2 HBP.

But Casey far from leads the league in this category. That distinction goes to Salisbury Sea Gull senior #10 IN Katie Sebbane (Frederick, MD) who was hit an amazing 17 times in the 43 games she played. The second most hit was Christopher Newport Captain freshman #36 catcher Nicole Killen (Strasburg, VA) who was a magnet for 8 collisions at the plate with the fast pitched softball.
