"A critic might tell you that sports don't matter. They might point to other, "more important" things, and encourage you to grow up. They might belittle and vilify the jocks of the world; the meatheads who were more focused on their team than their homework. They might be right.
"But make no mistake; such surefooted critics might also be missing something...
"Sports is the frame that helps create stability and a sense of order. It's the small talk that leads to the conversation that enlightens you to some valuable part of yourself. It's the metaphor that teaches you the importance of not getting too high, or low. It's the game that keeps you young, and ironically, resisting with all your might the twilight of your years. Sports is the conduit that showed us what disappointment, longing, grief, regret, joy, pride, and surprise is all about. And ultimately, we share that with those most important to us in a way that provides true connection."
