SENOR FROG PLANS

Myrtle Beach bash
Wolverines plan good vibrations:
balloon hats, karaoke, and dancing

Whether it's Orlando, Florida, or Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the Wesley Wolverines REALLY like to celebrate at Senor Frog's, usually on the last evening on the road AFTER a hard fought, eight-or-more game tournament.

The festivities at the Mexican grill are always a relax, amicable atmosphere "where people of all backgrounds," Senor Frog promises, "hang together, dance, sing and basically act the way they want without worrying about silly rules and regulations."

Our Wolverines, if the past is any indication, seem to be particularly partial to balloon hats, karaoke, and dancing!

There's no difference in the out-of-town plans this year for the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic as arrangements are already being made for dinner and conviviality on Friday, March 10, along the famed Broadway at the Beach (which itself is another great social venue). If you can, join the Wolverines at...

LEARNING THE GAME

NEW BOOK: LEARNING THE GAME

The author’s new book, “Fastpitch: The Untold History of Softball and the Women Who Made the Game,” chronicles the rise of the sport, the decline of company-sponsored teams and the way Title IX and the college game gave fastpitch softball a needed boost. The book illustrates how softball has evolved over the decades and includes stories from some of the sport’s key players.

POST-WORKOUT RECOVERY

"Three R’s"
NCAA guide to crucial
post-workout recovery

Condensed from a longer article by registered dietitian Lauren Link, Purdue University, titled "Recovery Mode, An expert’s solutions for post-workout refueling" at NCAA.org.

"It’s easy to assume the reps you perform in the weight room or the sweat you shed on the field directly correlate to bigger muscles and more strength. But in reality, this conditioning breaks your muscles down one tiny rip at a time. It isn’t until after the workout, when your heart rate has returned to normal and your muscles finally rest, that the real growth can begin...

Wesley Wolverine senior #18 C Nina Marcano (Middletown, DE)
"REHYDRATE...

"... athletes (should) drink 16-24 ounces, or 2-3 cups, of fluid for every pound they lost in their workout. If the athlete tends to sweat heavily, it could be a good idea to sip a sports drink before, during and after workouts in addition to water to aid with electrolyte loss...

"REPAIR…

"...strive to get at least 20 grams (of protein) for a post-workout snack or meal. But they also should keep in mind that protein alone won’t build muscles – you need enough calories, too...

"REFUEL...

"During a long, intense workout, athletes deplete their stores of carbohydrates, the body’s main source of energy. It’s important to replenish these stores as soon after the workout as possible – ideally within 30 to 45 minutes of exercising."

WOLVERINES' FEISTY SPIRIT

Wesley Wolverines 2017 schedule

COASTAL CAROLINA TOURNAMENT

We're rooting for Coastal Carolina!
DI softball playing near
Wolverines @ Myrtle Beach

As most fans know, the Wesley Wolverines will play in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, North Myrtle Beach, SC, March 4 - 11, 2017.

The Classic with its 90+ college teams will not be the only softball games in town that week.

About 27 miles west of this DIII tournament is the Charles Wade-John Lott Softball Field, Conway, SC, home of the DI Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.

Wesley Wolverine Assistant Coach
Brooke Donovan, pictured above, holds the
Coastal Carolina softball record for most
games played: a total of 234. She will travel
with the Wolverines this March to North
Myrtle Beach, near the University where
she once wore the Chanticleer colors.
The Chanticleers plan a full week of fastpitch action, as well.

Lots of softball at Myrtle this Spring

There will be a dozen or more DI softball games played on the Chanticleers' field while the Wolverines do battle at the Central Park Sports Complex. Now you don't want to miss a single Wesley inning, but there should be plenty of opportunity for dedicated fastpitch fans to steal away to a Coastal Carolina contest or two.

Why Coastal Carolina is a  special team

The Chanticleers are a special team for our Wesley Wolverines. First, because this is the DI home team for North Myrtle Beach where the Wolverines have played spring games for many years, almost annually.

Second -- MOST IMPORTANTLY -- there is a star Chanticleer that has been traveling with the Wolverines since last year. She is Assistant Coach Brooke Donovan. Brooke holds the Coastal Carolina University's record for most fastpitch games played by a Chanticleer -- a total of 234!! Click here for Brooke's Coastal Carolina bio and her amazing stats during her playing days from 2011- 2014.

Third, no true softball fan wants to miss an opportunity to visit the Coastal Carolina softball stadium. It is ranked among the nation's upper echelon of baseball-softball combined facilities. Many have even deemed the fields as "the best overall".

DI SC game dates and times below, March 3 - 11, 2017

All told, you can catch as much softball at all levels as you wish if you are headed to North Myrtle Beach over this coming spring break 2017.

Listed below are softball games being played at Coastal Carolina this March 3 - 11. There are a few conflicting times posted online. So check ahead before you plan on a definite start time.

JULIANNA NEEL SIGNED

2017 RECRUIT P/1B JULIANNA NEEL
(HADDON TOWNSHIP, NJ) SIGNING

New recruit signed
Julianna Neel: potential
game/ program changer

Julianna Neel signed today to join the Wesley Wolverines next fall. She is a pitcher/ first base player from Westmont, New Jersey and attends Haddon Township High School.

Julianna Neel

"We are extremely excited to have Juli joining our program," said Head Coach Juli Greep.

Julianna brings with her an impressive array of softball accolades. Not only did she earn 1st team All-Colonial Conference honors, Julianna also was voted the "best softball pitcher" in the conference as well as shining as a 3rd team New Jersey All-Group member. Last season, she notched 107 Ks over 113 innings thrown.

Head Coach Juli Greep offers high praise. "Julianna also has the potential to contribute a powerful bat offensively for us as well as play solid defense at first," Coach Greep stated.

FROM TOP, FIRST PHOTO: Juli and
 pitching coach Tom Besser;
SECOND PHOTO: Juli and
HS coach Frank Ottinger;

In 2016, Julianna delivered a .419 batting average and 5 home runs for the Haddon Township Hawks.

For her travel-ball team last summer (2016), she led the 18U Silver Bullets Fastpitch to the World Fast Pitch Conference World Series Title.

Julianna's mother, Laurie, is a Wesley College alumnus. That makes the second daughter of an alumnus on the team. 2017 recruit P/UT Abbey Mayse's mother, Laura, also is a Wesley Grad and works in the Alumni office.

"Julianna is a pitcher with the potential to be a true game and program changer," Coach Greep boasts. "She consistently throws in the 60 mph range."

"It is not just the speed that makes her special," Coach Greep said. "She has tight spin and can mix speeds as well as anyone, deceiving hitters which leads to the ball missing the bat."

Julianna is part of a trio of incoming fastpitch hurlers for the Wesley Wolverines. Each is slated to play a key role.

"We are graduating the brunt of our pitching staff so having (incoming freshmen) Dori (Loukopoulos), Abbey and Juli will truly be a three deep powerful punch on the mound," said Coach Greep. "They all pitch very differently and will allow us to have a nice mix."

Coach Greep added: "The future of our program is very bright much in thanks to our outstanding 2017 senior class who have paved the way for those to come."
