BIANCA NEWSOM SIGNING
2017 Wolverine recruit Bianca Newsom with family at today's signing |
The sixth recruit signed
Future Wesley shortstop, outfielder,
Bianca Newsom, all-around athlete
The sixth new softball recruit, future class of 2021, signed today to become a Wesley Wolverine fastpitch player. She arrives next September 2017 on the Wesley College campus, Dover, DE.
Bianca Newsom, an academic and athletic star. |
She is Bianca Newsom from Edison, New Jersey. Among the other 2017 recruits, two more are from New Jersey (Egg Harbor & Haddon Township), two from Pennsylvania (Chambersburg & Hershey) and another out of Maryland (Cecilton).
Bianca is as comfortable tracking fly balls across outfield grass as she is snaring hard hit grounders on infield dirt. She brings a strong bat to the plate, where she also can effectively slap hit.
"Bianca is a shortstop/center fielder with a very strong arm, quick feet and possesses the skill to be a significant impact player," said Head Coach Juli Greep. "Bianca will help shore up the middle of our field and also add another solid bat to our lineup."
She's a star at Edison High School, Edison, NJ, producing academically with a 3.9 GPA and, as a two-sport athlete, on the basketball court and softball field, as well.
"She was named to the all-area (softball) team the last two years, and is also a multi-year starter at Edison High School on both the softball and basketball teams," noted Coach Greep.
"She plays for the East Coast Elite Gold (South Plainfield, NJ) which is an exceptionally high-level team who produces primarily division 1 caliber players," Coach Greep added. The East Coast Elite Gold club team plays an extremely competitive schedule at distant top flight venues like Boulder, CO. and Huntington Beach, CA., while also often qualifying for the PGF Nationals.

LIFE LESSONS TAUGHT
Four lessons learned
College athletics prepares players
for life's many tests and challenges
Quotes pulled from an online story headlined "Life Lessons Taught Through Sports" by Maggie Tabone at the Varsity News website. CLICK HERE for the full article.
"Sports have a lasting unique impact on our lives that cannot be compared to any other type of activity... one learns many great life lessons about working with others, facing adversity and effort...
1. Hard Work Beats Talent When Talent Doesn’t Work Hard
"I was never the most talented athlete on any of the teams that I played for. I made my mark by working hard.... This translates to my everyday life... My academic success does not come from being the “smartest,” it purely comes from working hard and being diligent...
2. Adversity Builds Character
"I have dealt with many different types of adversity as an athlete... I have learned to take adversity with grace and accept the challenge... Just because something didn’t go your way this time, doesn’t mean that you can’t fight through! This applies in the classroom, in relationships with others and in the workplace...
3. Teamwork Makes The Dream Work
"Being an athlete I have learned that we might not like everyone we come in contact with, but we must be able to respect them and put it aside for the greater good of the team. Being on a team has challenged me to work with teammates to accomplish our goals... I know I will be able to peacefully work with co-workers because I have had these experiences.
4. Pushing Myself Outside My Comfort Zone
"Having the ability to test myself and know that it is ok to step out of your comfort zone has allowed me to continue to strive to reach my fullest potential, in all aspects of my life."

Jose Marcano |
He will be entering his fourth year this season of shooting Wolverines batting, running, sliding, fielding grounders, chasing down fly balls or just having pre-game or post-game fun on the sidelines.
He rarely misses a game at home, or on the road, or at Myrtle Beach, or Orlando, Florida! He shares his work with everyone via a post at this blog that is provided copyright free for fans, family, and friends to view and/or download.
In the past, Jose has usually positioned himself and his camera for home games behind the center field wall. That may change with the new, higher fence at Dupont Softball Field, but Jose has always proved very resourceful, too. So, we will see.
Jose doesn't take “a” photo of any single play. He has his finger pressed on burst mode for a string of continuous shots. It is not unusual for Jose to deliver 200 or 300, sometimes 400 or even more photos from a day's doubleheader.
The best of his work -- about 100+ shots per doubleheader -- is shared with everyone at this blog. You will find fresh shots of the upcoming 2017 season from Jose posted here in the weeks ahead.
Thank you from everyone, Jose Marcano.
